R22 — also known commercially as Freon R22 or HCFC-22 — is the refrigerant of Egypt’s enormous pre-2015 AC installed base. Every split AC, window AC and commercial system installed in Egypt from the mid-1980s through to approximately 2015 runs on R22. That represents the majority of Egypt’s total air conditioning fleet. Despite global phase-out pressure and the gradual transition to R410A in new installations, R22 demand in Egypt remains the highest-volume refrigerant category in the Egyptian wholesale market — and will continue to be so for 8–12 more years as the ageing fleet slowly turns over.

Al Faisal A/C Spare Parts Trading LLC supplies R22 wholesale to Egyptian importers from Dubai — six brands across five origins, covering the full price range from budget Indian-manufactured 13.6KG cylinders to premium French Arkema Forane®. All shipped by sea freight from Jebel Ali to Alexandria and Port Said weekly, with full export documentation as standard.

Why R22 Demand Stays Strong in Egypt — The Market Reality

Africa’s Largest R22 Installed Base

Egypt has the largest air conditioning installed base in Africa. The majority of units — those installed before approximately 2015 — run on R22. With 104 million people in a country where summer temperatures regularly exceed 40°C, these systems are serviced heavily every year. Each system needs a top-up or recharge, and each top-up means R22 demand.

Egypt’s Article 5 Phase-Down Schedule

Under the Montreal Protocol, Egypt is classified as an Article 5 developing country — giving it a later HCFC phase-down schedule than developed nations. Egypt’s R22 import allowance remains in force with gradual reductions. Egyptian HVAC dealers can still legally import R22 with the correct EEAA permits. This is not a product in immediate regulatory jeopardy in Egypt.

Slow Fleet Turnover

Egyptian households and businesses rarely replace functioning AC units simply because a newer refrigerant standard has emerged. A working R22 split AC stays in service until the compressor fails. Given Egypt’s economic pressures, consumers repair rather than replace wherever possible — sustaining R22 demand far beyond what global phase-out timelines might suggest.

8–12 More Years of Strong Demand

Industry analysis consistently shows that Egypt’s R22 aftermarket will remain substantial through the early 2030s. Egyptian dealers who stock R22 now are not stocking a declining product — they are stocking the highest-volume refrigerant in the largest AC market in Africa. The gradual phase-down affects new equipment production. It does not affect the servicing of existing systems.

⚠️ Critical Oil Rule for R22 Systems — Most Missed Point in Egyptian Workshops

R22 uses mineral oil or alkylbenzene as its lubricant. It is incompatible with POE oil — the oil required for R410A and R134a systems. This is the most dangerous oil mix-up in Egyptian HVAC workshops:

  • Do not use POE oil in an R22 system — POE and mineral oil do not mix and the combination will form sludge that blocks the expansion valve and destroys the compressor
  • When replacing a compressor in an R22 system, use mineral oil or alkylbenzene in the new compressor — matching what is already in the system
  • If the system has been contaminated with POE oil, a complete oil flush is required before installing the new compressor
  • Al Faisal stocks Motorol Refrin 68 — the correct compressor oil for R22 refrigeration applications

R22 Retrofit Options — When Egyptian Systems Need to Transition

Not every Egyptian R22 system needs to stay on R22 forever. For systems where the owner wants to move away from R22 — without the cost of full system replacement — Al Faisal supplies two certified retrofit options.

R417A — Drop-In Retrofit, No Oil Change

The most practical retrofit for Egyptian technicians. R417A is compatible with existing mineral oil in R22 systems — meaning the system can be switched without a complete oil flush. This dramatically reduces the time and cost of upgrading older Egyptian R22 systems. Westron® and Maxron® R417A both available from Al Faisal.

Key advantage: No oil change needed · Existing mineral oil compatible

Browse R417A →

R407C — Commercial Chiller Retrofit

For larger commercial R22 systems — chillers, large split systems and commercial buildings in Egypt where full replacement is cost-prohibitive. R407C operates at similar pressures to R22, making it compatible with existing copper piping and many components when used with POE oil. Westron®, Maxron® and Forane® R407C all available from Al Faisal.

Note: Oil change to POE required · Used with existing R22 pipework

Browse R407C →

💡 Most Egyptian R22 systems should stay on R22 for now. Retrofit refrigerants (R417A, R407C) make economic sense only when the system owner specifically wants to move away from R22 — for example, ahead of a long-term service contract renewal, or for commercial systems approaching EEAA compliance requirements. For the majority of Egyptian residential R22 systems, continuing to service with genuine R22 gas is the most cost-effective approach.

R22 Import to Egypt — EEAA Compliance Notes

⚠️ Egyptian importers — R22 requires EEAA compliance documentation

R22 (HCFC-22) import into Egypt is regulated by the Egyptian Environmental Affairs Agency (EEAA) under Egypt’s commitments to the Montreal Protocol. Egyptian importers must hold the correct EEAA import permits and quota allocation for R22. This is entirely the importer’s responsibility — Al Faisal does not apply for or manage Egyptian import permits.

What Al Faisal provides to support EEAA compliance: Certificate of Origin (Dubai Chamber — confirming the manufacturing country of each brand), Material Safety Data Sheet (MSDS) for R22, and product specifications confirming the refrigerant is R22 / HCFC-22. For Westron® brand, a Certificate of Analysis is available confirming purity. All documents available in English; Arabic translations on request.

Counterfeit R22 in Egypt — Know What You Are Buying

Egypt’s R22 market has a significant counterfeit problem. Counterfeit R22 is typically a cheaper gas — sometimes a hydrocarbon like propane, sometimes a diluted or off-specification blend — repackaged in cylinders labelled as genuine R22. The consequences of installing counterfeit R22 in an Egyptian split AC system include rapid compressor failure (wrong operating pressures), fire risk (if flammable gas is passed off as R22), and destruction of the system owner’s trust in the technician.

✅ How to verify genuine R22 — Egyptian importer checklist

  1. Cylinder colour is light green — verify label AND colour together
  2. The label clearly states the brand, R22 / HCFC-22, manufacturing country and batch number
  3. Cylinder valve seal and security tag are intact and unbroken on receipt
  4. Supplier provides a Certificate of Origin confirming the manufacturing country
  5. Supplier provides MSDS confirming the product is chlorodifluoromethane (HCFC-22)
  6. For Westron® brand — contact Al Faisal directly to verify batch numbers against our records
  7. Be suspicious of any R22 priced significantly below established market rates — counterfeit gas is cheap to produce
  8. Buy directly from the source — Al Faisal exports direct from Jebel Ali, no intermediary who can adulterate the product

Frequently Asked Questions — R22 Refrigerant for Egypt

Is R22 still legal to import into Egypt?

Yes, as of 2025. Egypt is an Article 5 developing country under the Montreal Protocol and has a different HCFC phase-down schedule from developed nations. R22 import into Egypt is legal with the correct EEAA (Egyptian Environmental Affairs Agency) import permits and within the allocated quota. The phase-down is gradual — R22 import is not banned but the permitted volumes are being reduced over time. Egyptian importers must hold current EEAA permits. Al Faisal provides all necessary documentation from the Dubai side (Certificate of Origin, MSDS, DG Declaration) to support Egyptian Customs clearance.

What oil should be used in Egyptian R22 AC systems?

Mineral oil or alkylbenzene — these are the correct lubricants for R22 systems. Never use POE (polyolester) oil in an R22 system — POE is for R410A and R134a. Using POE in an R22 system causes the oils to separate, forming sludge that blocks the expansion valve and destroys the compressor. Al Faisal stocks Motorol Refrin 68 — the correct mineral oil for R22 refrigeration applications.

Can R22 be mixed with R410A or any other refrigerant in the same system?

Absolutely not. R22 must never be mixed with any other refrigerant, and R410A must never be introduced into an R22 system. R410A operates at approximately double the system pressure of R22 — adding R410A to an R22 system causes immediate over-pressurisation and catastrophic failure. If an R22 system needs to transition to a different refrigerant, the correct approach is a certified retrofit using R417A (no oil change required) or R407C (with POE oil change), not a mixture of R22 with any other gas.

What is the difference between Westron® R22, REFRON R22 and Forane® R22?

All three are genuine R22 (HCFC-22) refrigerant — the difference is manufacturing origin, documentation and price tier. Forane® by Arkema is French-manufactured, the global premium standard — highest purity, European Certificate of Origin, preferred by premium commercial contractors. Westron® is UAE-manufactured under Al Faisal’s own brand — strong documentation, UAE Certificate of Origin, Al Faisal’s direct quality guarantee. REFRON and MAFRON are Indian-manufactured — the most price-competitive options, well-established brands in the Middle East and Africa market, suitable for high-volume Egyptian residential maintenance dealers.

How much longer will Egyptian dealers need R22 stock?

Industry estimates consistently point to the early-to-mid 2030s as the period when R22 demand in Egypt begins declining significantly — as the remaining pre-2015 AC fleet reaches end-of-life and is replaced with R410A or R32 systems. This means Egyptian dealers have approximately 8–12 more years of strong R22 demand from 2025. R22 is not a product to stop stocking — it is the highest-volume refrigerant in Egypt’s current aftermarket and will remain so for years. The sensible approach is to stock R22 steadily while beginning to build R410A and R32 inventory for the transition.
