What is the difference between a medium-temperature and low-temperature cold room compressor?
The temperature classification refers to the evaporating temperature the compressor is designed to achieve — which determines the storage temperature in the cold room. Medium-temperature compressors (also called MT) are designed for evaporating temperatures of approximately -10°C to +5°C, producing storage room temperatures of 0°C to +8°C — suitable for fresh produce, dairy, beverages and pharmaceutical storage. Low-temperature compressors (LT) are designed for evaporating temperatures of -35°C to -15°C, producing freezer temperatures of -18°C to -25°C — required for frozen food, ice cream, blast freezing and long-term frozen storage. Using a medium-temperature compressor in a low-temperature application will result in the compressor running continuously, failing to achieve the target temperature, and eventually failing from liquid refrigerant return to the compressor suction. Can R404A be replaced with R134a in an existing cold room system?
No — not without system modification. R404A and R134a have different pressure-temperature relationships and different capacity characteristics. A cold room system designed and set up for R404A — with expansion valve sizing, compressor displacement and control settings matched to R404A’s properties — will not perform correctly with R134a. The evaporating temperature at a given low-side pressure is different for the two refrigerants, meaning the expansion valve, thermostat and other controls will not work at the correct operating points. Systems designed for R404A should continue to use R404A for service. R134a is appropriate for medium-temperature applications specifically designed for it — typically operating at evaporating temperatures above -10°C.
How important is the filter-drier replacement in commercial refrigeration compressor work?
The filter-drier (or liquid-line drier) in a commercial refrigeration circuit is not optional replacement — it is mandatory whenever the system is opened for compressor replacement or major repair. The filter-drier contains desiccant that absorbs moisture from the refrigerant circuit and a filter mesh that captures debris. Once the desiccant is saturated — which happens rapidly when a system is opened to atmosphere — it can no longer protect the new compressor from moisture damage. After a compressor burnout, the filter-drier also catches metallic debris and acid from the failed compressor before they can reach the new unit.
