Can I use an AC rotary compressor in a cold room?
No — AC rotary compressors and cold room reciprocating compressors are fundamentally different technologies with different application envelopes. AC rotary compressors are designed for evaporating temperatures of +5°C to +15°C. Cold room applications require evaporating temperatures as low as -40°C for deep freeze. AC rotary compressors cannot achieve the compression ratios required for low-temperature operation. For cold rooms, always use purpose-designed refrigeration reciprocating compressors — Tecumseh, Kulthorn or equivalent.
What refrigerant do Egyptian cold rooms typically use?
Cold rooms installed in Egypt from approximately 2000 onwards typically use R404A — the standard commercial refrigeration refrigerant that replaced R22 in new cold room installations. Older pre-2000 cold rooms use R22, which requires an EEAA import permit. R507A is increasingly used as an alternative to R404A — it has lower GWP and similar performance. Why is the filter drier so critical for cold room systems compared to AC?
Cold room systems operate at much lower evaporating temperatures than AC — at -18°C or lower, any moisture in the refrigerant circuit freezes at the expansion valve, causing a complete ice blockage that stops refrigeration. In an AC system, moisture damage is slower and less immediately catastrophic — in a cold room, ice blockage at the expansion valve can render the system completely inoperative within hours of contamination.
