Rotary, Scroll & Inverter Guide
Understanding the difference between rotary, scroll and inverter compressors is the foundation of correct replacement decisions for Kenyan HVAC workshops. This guide covers what each type does, where it is used, and how to order the right one.
The most consequential mistake a Kenyan HVAC workshop makes when replacing a failed compressor is fitting the wrong compressor type. A rotary compressor in place of a scroll, or a standard AC motor rotary in place of a BLDC twin rotary — both look similar from the outside and may even share capacity ratings, but neither will work correctly in the system it was not designed for. The inverter PCB that drives a BLDC compressor communicates with the motor through feedback signals. A conventional rotary motor does not send those signals. The result is a fault code, reduced performance or a system that will not run at all.
This guide covers the three compressor technologies in Kenya’s residential and commercial AC market — rotary, scroll and inverter BLDC — what distinguishes them mechanically, which AC systems use which, and the ordering decisions that flow from that understanding. Al Faisal supplies all three types from Dubai, exported weekly to Mombasa.
💡 The compressor nameplate tells you the type. Rotary compressors are marked as rotary type. Scroll compressors are marked as scroll type. BLDC inverter compressors show the motor type as BLDC or brushless DC, with frequency range specifications. If the nameplate is unreadable, the AC outdoor unit model number is the next reference — WhatsApp us the model and we identify the compressor type.
Rotary Compressors — The Standard in Kenya’s Residential AC
Rotary compressors are the most common compressor type in Kenya’s installed residential AC base. They are inside the majority of standard fixed-speed split AC units from LG, Samsung, Midea, Haier and Gree sold in Kenya over the past fifteen years. They are mechanically simple, reliable, widely manufactured by GMCC, Highly and LG, and available in the full range of capacities and refrigerant types required for Kenyan residential service work.
How Rotary Works
A rotary compressor uses an eccentric rotating cylinder inside a fixed cylindrical housing. As the rotor spins, it sweeps refrigerant vapour from the suction port, compresses it against the housing wall, and discharges it at high pressure through the discharge valve. The compression is continuous — no reciprocating motion, no valves opening and closing with each stroke — making rotary compressors smoother and quieter than older reciprocating designs. Single-stage rotary is the standard in residential split AC. Twin rotary (two compression cylinders operating 180° out of phase) is LG’s Dual Inverter design.
Where Rotary Is Used in Kenya
Fixed-speed residential split AC — the majority of LG, Samsung, Midea, Haier and Gree units installed in Kenyan homes and apartments. Window AC units. Standard-speed cassette units in commercial buildings. Single-speed package units in older commercial installations. If the AC unit does not have an inverter label and was installed before approximately 2015, the compressor inside is almost certainly a rotary.
Ordering Rotary Compressors
Rotary compressor replacement requires matching capacity (HP or BTU/ton), refrigerant type (R22, R410A or R32), voltage (220–240V single phase for residential Kenya), and mounting configuration. Brand substitution is generally acceptable for standard rotary — a GMCC R410A 1.5-ton rotary is a valid replacement for an LG R410A 1.5-ton rotary in a fixed-speed unit. For Mombasa installations, specify T3. Al Faisal stocks GMCC, Highly and LG rotary in the full residential range.
Scroll Compressors — Standard in Inverter AC & Commercial Systems
Scroll compressors are the technology inside inverter split AC and most commercial AC equipment in Kenya. Where rotary compressors are the workhorse of the residential fixed-speed market, scroll compressors handle the more demanding requirements of variable-speed inverter operation and larger commercial system capacities.
How Scroll Works
A scroll compressor uses two spiral-shaped scroll elements — one fixed, one orbiting. As the orbiting scroll moves, refrigerant vapour is drawn into the outer edge of the spiral, trapped in progressively smaller pockets as the orbit continues, and compressed toward the centre where it discharges at high pressure. The continuous, smooth compression produces less vibration and noise than rotary designs and handles variable-speed drive better — qualities that make scroll the preferred technology for inverter AC systems where compressor speed changes constantly with cooling demand.
Where Scroll Is Used in Kenya
Inverter split AC systems — the growing share of Kenyan residential and commercial AC that carries the inverter label. Commercial split AC and cassette units in the 2-ton to 5-ton range. Daikin residential and commercial systems. Carrier commercial split AC (Copeland scroll). VRF outdoor units (multiple scroll compressors in parallel). Cold room condensing units using Copeland semi-hermetic scroll. If the outdoor unit has an inverter label or the capacity is above 2.5-ton, scroll is the likely compressor type.
Ordering Scroll Compressors
Scroll compressor replacement requires matching capacity, refrigerant type and — critically for inverter systems — the motor type (AC induction vs BLDC) and the frequency operating range. Invotech scroll compressors cover the inverter residential range for Kenyan workshops. Copeland scroll covers the commercial range for Carrier and cold room applications. Do not substitute a rotary for a scroll in an inverter system — the compressor technology must match. Al Faisal stocks Invotech scroll in R410A and R32 across the 1-ton to 3-ton inverter range.
BLDC Inverter Compressors — LG Dual Inverter & Variable Speed
BLDC (brushless DC) compressors are the most technologically advanced compressor type in Kenya’s residential market — and the one that generates the most service errors when workshops attempt to substitute conventional alternatives. A BLDC inverter compressor is not simply a faster rotary — it is a fundamentally different motor technology that requires a matched inverter drive and communicates bidirectionally with the outdoor PCB.
How BLDC Works
A BLDC motor replaces the conventional AC induction motor with a permanent magnet rotor and electronically commutated windings. The outdoor inverter PCB sends variable-frequency DC pulses to the motor windings in the correct sequence to produce rotation — the motor speed is precisely controlled by the PCB, with feedback from motor position sensors confirming correct operation. This closed-loop control is why a conventional rotary motor without position feedback will not operate correctly when driven by a BLDC inverter PCB.
LG Dual Inverter — Twin Rotary BLDC
LG’s Dual Inverter technology combines twin rotary compression chambers with a BLDC motor drive — two rotary stages operating 180° out of phase to reduce vibration, driven by LG’s proprietary inverter PCB. The twin rotary BLDC compressor in LG Dual Inverter units is an LG-specific design and must be replaced with an LG-matched unit. No generic GMCC or Highly compressor substitutes for an LG twin rotary BLDC in a Dual Inverter system.
Other BLDC Inverter Brands in Kenya
Samsung, Panasonic, Daikin and Mitsubishi Electric inverter systems all use BLDC motor drives — though the specific compressor design varies by brand. Samsung uses rotary BLDC in its Digital Inverter range. Daikin uses swing BLDC compressors. In all cases, the replacement compressor must be matched to the specific brand and model — the inverter PCB is calibrated for its original motor, and substitutions produce faults or suboptimal performance.
⚠️ Never fit a standard rotary in place of a BLDC inverter compressor
A conventional AC induction rotary compressor installed in place of a BLDC inverter compressor will either throw an immediate fault code and refuse to run, or run poorly at a fixed low speed as the inverter PCB attempts to operate it outside the correct motor feedback parameters. Either outcome means a return visit, an unhappy customer, and the cost of sourcing the correct BLDC compressor that should have been fitted the first time. The only correct replacement for a BLDC inverter compressor is a matched BLDC unit — brand-matched for LG Dual Inverter, and brand or OEM-cross-referenced for other inverter brands. Al Faisal identifies the correct BLDC compressor from the outdoor unit model number.

Frequently Asked Questions
How do I identify the compressor type from the outdoor unit without opening it?
The outdoor unit model number is the starting point — most AC brands publish their technical specifications online and the compressor type is listed in the technical data sheet for each model. The inverter label on the outdoor unit is the first indicator: a unit labelled as inverter uses either a scroll or BLDC rotary compressor. A unit with no inverter label and below 2.5-ton capacity almost certainly uses a single rotary. For LG units, the Dual Inverter label specifically indicates the twin rotary BLDC design. If you send us the outdoor unit model number, we identify the compressor type and advise on the correct replacement before you open the unit.
Is a scroll compressor more reliable than a rotary for Kenyan conditions?
Neither is inherently more reliable than the other when correctly specified and installed. Rotary compressors in correctly rated (T3 for coastal, T1 for Nairobi), correctly charged and properly evacuated systems give 8–12 years of reliable service in Kenya. Scroll compressors in inverter systems give comparable service life when correctly charged by weight and protected from moisture contamination. The compressor type is not the reliability variable — the T-rating for the climate, the evacuation quality, the charge accuracy and the condenser maintenance are what determine longevity in the Kenyan environment. Both types fail early for the same reasons: wrong T-rating, moisture contamination, incorrect charge and blocked condensers.
What does BLDC stand for and why does it matter for compressor replacement?
BLDC stands for Brushless DC — a motor design that uses permanent magnets in the rotor and electronic commutation rather than the physical brushes and commutator used in older DC motors. The electronic commutation is managed by the inverter PCB, which sends precisely timed current pulses to the motor windings based on rotor position feedback. This closed-loop control gives the PCB precise speed control across a wide frequency range — and it is why the compressor must match the PCB. A conventional AC induction motor does not have the permanent magnet rotor or position feedback that the BLDC inverter PCB is designed to work with. Fitting one produces a mismatch that the PCB cannot resolve through normal control algorithms.
