R134a Refrigerant Kenya —
Fridge Gas & Automotive AC Supply from Dubai
R134a is the refrigerant in domestic refrigerators, cold room display cabinets and the automotive AC systems of Kenya’s large vehicle fleet. Supplied wholesale from Dubai, shipped by sea freight to Mombasa with full DG documentation.
R134a sits in a different part of the Kenyan refrigeration market to R22, R410A and R32. It is not an AC refrigerant in the residential split system sense — it is the refrigerant that keeps Kenyan refrigerators running, that cools supermarket display cabinets, and that powers the air conditioning in the Toyota, Nissan, Mitsubishi and Isuzu vehicles that make up the majority of Kenya’s vehicle fleet. For HVAC workshops in Nairobi that service both building AC and vehicle AC — a common business model — R134a is a separate but equally consistent revenue stream sitting alongside their residential AC work.
Al Faisal supplies R134a wholesale from Dubai to Kenyan buyers, consolidated with R22, R410A and R32 in LCL sea freight containers from Jebel Ali to Mombasa. Adding R134a to your consolidated refrigerant order costs no additional freight overhead — it ships in the same container as everything else.
💡 R134a and R410A are not interchangeable — but they ship together. R134a is a lower-pressure refrigerant than R410A and operates in different systems — refrigerators, car AC, and some older cold room equipment. It ships in the same LCL container from Jebel Ali to Mombasa as R22, R410A and R32 under DG Class 2.2 (non-flammable compressed gas). One consolidated shipment covers your complete refrigerant stock requirement across all four types.
Where R134a Is Used in the Kenyan Market
Understanding exactly which applications use R134a in Kenya is important for workshops deciding how much to stock. The three main segments — domestic refrigeration, commercial refrigeration, and automotive AC — each have distinct service characteristics and volume profiles.
Domestic Refrigerators & Freezers
The majority of domestic refrigerators and upright freezers sold in Kenya over the past two decades use R134a. This covers the LG, Samsung, Hisense, Ramtons and Hotpoint refrigerators found in Kenyan homes and guesthouses across Nairobi, Mombasa and upcountry. Refrigerator leaks and compressor failures are steady workshop revenue — R134a is the refrigerant in essentially all of them. Workshops that service domestic appliances alongside AC equipment need R134a in stock continuously.
Commercial Refrigeration & Display Cabinets
Supermarket display cabinets, bottle coolers, commercial under-counter refrigerators and reach-in coolers widely use R134a. Nairobi’s growing supermarket sector — both large chains and independent retailers — represents a significant commercial refrigeration service market. Many of these units use hermetic compressors (Embraco, Secop/Danfoss) running on R134a. Cold room condensing units in some smaller walk-in applications also use R134a. Workshops with commercial refrigeration service contracts will consume R134a in consistent quantities.
Automotive AC — Kenya’s Vehicle Fleet
Kenya’s vehicle fleet is dominated by Japanese-origin imports — Toyota Harrier, Prado and Hilux, Nissan X-Trail and Patrol, Mitsubishi Pajero and L200, Isuzu trucks — all of which use R134a in their automotive AC systems. This is a large and consistent service market in Nairobi. Vehicle AC compressors (Denso and Sanden primarily) fail from age, contamination and belt wear, and the refrigerant in virtually all of them is R134a. Workshops that run vehicle AC service alongside building AC have R134a demand from both sides of the business.
Servicing R134a Systems — Key Technical Points
R134a is one of the more forgiving refrigerants to work with — lower operating pressures than R410A, non-flammable (A1 classification), and compatible with standard refrigeration service tools. The technical points that matter for Kenyan workshops are around correct charging technique and oil compatibility.
Operating Pressures — R134a
R134a operates at lower pressures than AC refrigerants. Typical operating pressures for a domestic refrigerator or car AC at normal ambient: suction 20–40 PSI, discharge 150–220 PSI. Car AC high-side pressure varies significantly with engine speed and ambient temperature — a vehicle AC system in Nairobi traffic on a warm day may show 200–250 PSI high side. These are well within the rating of standard R134a manifold gauges. R134a-specific manifold gauges with R134a pressure-temperature scales are the correct tool — do not use R22 or R410A gauges on R134a systems.
R134a Compressor Oil — PAG for Automotive
Automotive AC compressors running on R134a use PAG (polyalkylene glycol) oil — a synthetic oil specific to automotive AC applications. Domestic refrigerator compressors use mineral oil or ester oil. These are not interchangeable. When replacing an automotive AC compressor (Denso or Sanden), confirm the PAG oil specification — PAG 46 or PAG 100 depending on compressor type — and add the correct oil quantity when installing the new unit. Using mineral oil in a PAG-specification automotive compressor leads to poor lubrication and early failure.
Charging Vehicle AC by Weight
Vehicle AC systems specify the correct R134a charge in grams — typically 400–800g depending on vehicle size — on the underbonnet label near the AC service ports. Charging by weight using an electronic scale is more accurate than charging by pressure, particularly for smaller vehicle AC systems where even a 50g difference in charge weight produces a measurable performance change. Overcharged vehicle AC systems run high head pressure and wear the compressor. Undercharged systems cool poorly and cycle the compressor excessively.
Evacuation Before Charging — Vehicle & Refrigerator
Vacuum evacuation before charging applies to R134a systems just as it does to split AC. A vehicle AC system opened for compressor replacement or leak repair has drawn in atmospheric moisture — particularly important in Mombasa’s coastal humidity. Evacuate to 500 microns before charging. Domestic refrigerator compressor replacement similarly requires evacuation of the refrigerant circuit before charging with R134a. The moisture sensitivity of R134a systems is lower than R410A and R32 (mineral oil is less hygroscopic than POE), but moisture contamination still causes acid formation and compressor damage over time.
Automotive AC Compressors for Kenya’s Vehicle Fleet
R134a and automotive AC compressors are closely linked in the Kenyan workshop market — a vehicle AC compressor failure almost always means an R134a recharge alongside the compressor replacement. Al Faisal stocks Denso and Sanden automotive AC compressors covering the most common vehicle applications in Kenya’s Japanese-origin fleet.
Denso Automotive Compressors
Denso is the OEM AC compressor supplier for Toyota — which means Denso compressors are inside the majority of Kenyan vehicle AC systems. Toyota Harrier, Prado, Hilux, Land Cruiser, Corolla and Vitz all use Denso compressors. Al Faisal stocks Denso automotive AC compressors covering the models most commonly seen in Nairobi’s vehicle AC workshops. Ordering Denso compressors alongside R134a gas in the same consolidated shipment from Dubai is the efficient approach for Nairobi automotive workshops.
Sanden Automotive Compressors
Sanden compressors — the 507, 508 and 709 series — are fitted in Nissan, Mitsubishi, Isuzu and various other vehicle makes common in Kenya. The Sanden 508 in particular is one of the most widely used automotive AC compressors in East Africa and is a direct replacement for a broad range of Nissan and Mitsubishi AC failures. Al Faisal stocks Sanden compressors for the Kenyan vehicle market, available alongside R134a gas in the same Dubai export shipment.
⚠️ Flush the vehicle AC system before installing a new compressor
When an automotive AC compressor fails — particularly a burnout or seizure — metallic debris and contaminated oil circulate through the entire system: condenser, evaporator, receiver-drier and all lines. Installing a new Denso or Sanden compressor into a contaminated system without flushing guarantees early failure of the new unit. The correct procedure is: flush the condenser and evaporator with approved AC flush solvent, replace the receiver-drier (it cannot be flushed), replace the expansion valve if blocked, evacuate the complete system, then charge with the correct R134a weight and the correct PAG oil. Skipping the flush to save time is the single most common reason a replaced automotive AC compressor fails again within months.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is the difference between R134a and the newer refrigerant R1234yf in vehicle AC?
R1234yf is a newer low-GWP refrigerant that is mandatory in new vehicle AC systems in Europe and increasingly adopted in new vehicles globally. It has a much lower global warming potential than R134a (GWP of 4 vs R134a’s 1,430). In Kenya’s vehicle fleet — which is predominantly Japanese-origin used imports manufactured before R1234yf adoption was widespread — R134a remains the refrigerant in the vast majority of vehicles. Newer imported vehicles, particularly European-specification models, may use R1234yf. Before servicing any vehicle AC, confirm the refrigerant type from the underbonnet label. R1234yf and R134a are not interchangeable and require different service equipment.
Can I use R134a in a cold room that previously used R404A?
No — not without a system conversion, and in most cases this is not practical or advisable. R404A and R134a have different pressure-temperature relationships. An R404A condensing unit’s compressor, expansion valve and control settings are calibrated for R404A’s operating characteristics. Adding R134a to an R404A system — or vice versa — produces a refrigerant mixture with unpredictable behaviour and will not achieve the correct evaporating temperature. Cold rooms that run R404A need R404A for service. R134a is appropriate for cold room applications specifically designed and built around R134a — typically medium-temperature walk-in coolers and display cabinet applications. Al Faisal supplies R404A alongside R134a for Kenyan cold room buyers.
How much R134a does a typical Kenyan vehicle AC system take?
The correct charge weight for each vehicle is specified on the underbonnet AC label — always use this as the primary reference. As a general guide, typical R134a charges in common Kenyan vehicles are: Toyota Harrier and Prado 450–600g, Toyota Hilux 500–650g, Nissan X-Trail 450–550g, Mitsubishi Pajero 600–750g, Isuzu trucks vary by model and cab configuration. These are approximate ranges — the underbonnet label is the authoritative specification. Weigh in the correct amount with an electronic charging scale rather than estimating by pressure or approximation.
What PAG oil do I need with a Denso or Sanden replacement compressor?
PAG oil specification varies by compressor model. Denso compressors for Toyota vehicles commonly use PAG 46. Sanden 508 and 507 compressors commonly use PAG 46 or PAG 100 depending on the vehicle application. The correct PAG specification is printed on the compressor nameplate or in the vehicle service manual. Add the specified quantity of fresh PAG oil when installing the replacement compressor — most replacement compressors are shipped dry or with a small protective oil charge that is not sufficient for operation. Top up to the manufacturer’s specified quantity. Never mix PAG grades — if unsure, drain and refill with the correct grade rather than topping up an unknown oil with a different viscosity.
